Abstract:

The collection is composed of various kinds of documents and ephemeral materials, which are important for Ankara’s history. These materials which are an important source of information for the city history such as deed of trust of foundations and documents; official letters sent to persons or legal entities; correspondences of foreign missions; Ottoman firmans; berats; court registrations; bonds; bills; letters; diplomas; school reports; correspondences; identity cards; invitations, notifications; posters; tickets; postcards, brochures, from both the Ottoman and Republican era are part of this collections.

Access and Usage

Digital Access: The collection materials are digitalized when their conservation processes are completed, and they are opened to access online. Physical Access: VEKAM Ankara Documents Collection materials are present in the archive room. Researchers are not allowed to access the original materials.

Administrative/Biographic History

Ankara Documents Collection is opened to access since the first day VEKAM opened its doors. It became an important collection within the 25 years of the institution by purchases and donations. The collection is still developing.

Note on Scope and Context

Ankara Documents Collection is composed of various ephemeral materials such as foundation documents, Ottoman firmans, berats, court registrations, bills, letters, diplomas, school reports, correspondences, identity cards, invitations, posters, postcards, advertisement cards and baggage tags both from the Ottoman and Republican periods.

Inventory

Registrations are organized according to VEKAM Library and Archive Unit’s original order and provenance norms.

Processing Notes

Digitalization

The digitalization process was carried out both by outsourcing and in-house. In 2014 as VEKAM became a part of the Koc University, the digitalization processes were delivered to Koc University Suna Kırac Library.

Maps, plans, and drawings were digitalized in 300 dpi, TIFF using Zeutschel OS 12000C. Materials larger than A2 were scanned with CANON 5D Mark 3 and Mark 4. After 2018 VEKAM personnel carried out digitalizing process with Copibook Open System İ2S. Digitalized materials were transferred to CONTENTdm content management system in JPEG format and brought to use.
