Title: Josephine Powell Slide Collection

Abstract: This collection documents the study of Anatolian textiles and ethnography that occupied Josephine Powell from the mid-1970s to the time of her death in 2007. The collection contains some 35.000 of her photographs (color slides, color and b/w photographs, contact sheets and negatives) together with fieldnotes, research notes, lectures, articles and correspondence, several photo essays executed at the beginning of her career and audiovisual fragments, as well as personal correspondence, records, snapshots and belongings.

Scope and Contents of Collection

The contents of the collection:

1- Photographic Archive (over 40.000 photographs as slides, color and b/w negatives and prints). Of these, some 35.000 relate to Powell’s work with Anatolian textiles and ethnography; others include some early photo essays, personal snapshots and pictures used in exhibitions.

2- Notes from some 29 field trips that Powell made to Anatolia, where she visited villages and followed nomad groups. These notes relate to the photographic record she made there (Section 1, above) and in the digitized version the notes are interspersed with images, which the notes comment on and explain.

3- Professional Documents: Correspondence, Photo Orders and Invoices, Donations, Projects, Research Notes, Exhibitions and Photo-Essays, Talks and Articles, Information Cards of Pictures, DOBAG files, Clippings, Offprints

4- Audiovisual fragments (over 50 tapes which are recordings from different parts of the world)

Inventory

Records are organized parallel to the original order and provenance principles of the collector.
