Abstract: The Ankara Orchard House Collection is composed of ethnographic items that reflect the “orchard house” tradition, which refers to Ankara’s 18th and early 20th-century city culture.

The collection items are digitalized when their conservation processes are completed, and they are opened to access online.

Physical Access:

The materials in the VEKAM Ankara Orchard House Collection are exhibited and stored in Ankara Orchard House. Researchers are not allowed to access the original materials; however some of the items are exhibited in the orchard house.

Administrative/Biographic History

The curation process of the collection began in 2007 by Sadberk Hanım Museum before Ankara Orchard House was opened. Between 2007 and 2016, current Project and Activities Expert Arzu Beril Kırcı was responsible for the collection and inventory. Between 03.05.2017-02.06.2017 Conservator Ceyda Cüceloğlu and Art Historian Feyza Akder made preliminary research on the inventory for further development of the inventory. According to the results of mentioned research  Prof. Dr. Ömür Bakırker studied on glass materials (METU Architectural History); Prof. Dr. Zeren Tanıdı (Uludağ University) studied on calligraphic materials; Prof. Dr. Nurşen Fındık Özkul (Hacı Bayram Veli University) studied on ceramic materials; Doc. Dr. Muharrem Çeken (Ankara University) studied on metals, Doc. Dr. Hatice Tozun (Hacı Bayram Veli University) studied on textiles; Zafer Gülbahar (The Directorate of General Foundations) studied on carpets and rugs; Ceyda Cüceloğlu (VEKAM) studied on wooden materials. These studies were completed on 1 Ağustos 2019. Studies on the inventory are still being held by VEKAM.

Note on Scope and Context

The Ankara Orchard House Collection is composed of ethnographic artifacts that reflect Ankara’s   “orchard house” tradition with references to the social life of the city in the 18th, 19th, and early 20th-centuries. The collection is composed of metal, textile, wooden, ceramic, carpet/rug and glass materials.

Inventory

Registrations are organized according to VEKAM Library and Archive Unit’s original order and provenance norms.

The collection has 863 objects. 407 of these are kept in storage, and 456 of them are exhibited. 401 objects are present digitally within the archive management system.

Digitalizing

200 of the materials were re-digitilazed in 2014 within LoCloud Project. Equipment used in the project were:

With the studies began in 2017 textile materials and carpets/rugs were professionally photographed by the research team.
